A solid quirky story honestly. Who would have thought seeing the fall of the world via bio-hazardous reanimated corpses through the eyes of a cat could be interesting? Which this is. Despite it being a view of the zombie apocalypse from the perspective of a cat this manga is surprisingly human. The main protagonist, Yuki, a white cat (who AMAZINGLY NEVER GETS DIRTY), is thrown into the world of the undead and is handed off to various owners until the story's conclusion. And the mangaka effectively gives each of Yuki's owners enough screen time to where you care about them and want to root for them. And you fully understand why Yuki comes to love each and every one of them. Though it was bittersweet when Yuki found a safe haven with his newer owner by the end where he ends up having kittens with another cat only to get thrust back into the world of the undead when he chases after a lizard. The curiosity of a cat am I right? But thankfully someone saved him, scooped him up, and bolted in a new direction like so many other times. To start a brand new adventure. I liked this manga and would be interested in reading more works by Kitaoka. Would recommend, especially if you love cats. Oh, and legit out of everything that bites the dust in this story, no cats or dogs are harmed.

I am a Cat is a difficult book to summarize for several reasons. First of all, while characters, themes, and certain activities are consistent throughout the work, there is no overarching narrative. In the introduction, the translator notes that it could be considered 11 separate short stories. Furthermore, even within each of the 11 chapters, often very little will happen because the observations the nameless cat makes are meant to illuminate and parody human nature, not to tell a story. With this in mind, I will attempt to summarize each chapter as though it were a separate short story, with your understanding the it is impossible for me to really capture what is happening in the book. Also, I apologize for the length.
